Microbiology, Genetics & Chemistry (MiGC)
B.Sc with MiGC combination is a three-year degree course with equal preference given to all three subjects. The combination comprises of a paper each in theory as well as practical.
This course enables the students to develop mathematical skills, paradigms, concepts and theorems that help in construction and deconstruction of mathematical models, logical tools which have applications in various other fields.
First Year
In the first year, students are introduced to the fascinating world of micro organisms by highlighting on the milestone achievements in microbiology, exploring them to various aspects of microscopy, sterilization, classification and characterization of different organisms. They learn the basic concepts in virology, mycology and essentials of biomolecules. In genetics they learn fundamental principles taking examples from microbes, plants and animals. In chemistry, students study reaction intermediates in carbon chemistry; saturated and unsaturated aliphatic compounds basic knowledge on physical principles in various states of matter and understanding the structure and behavior of S & P block elements.
Second Year
In the second year, students learn highlights of nutrition, growth and intermediary metabolism in micro-organisms, microbial genetics, eukaryotic molecular biology, genome organization, fine structure analysis of gene, regulation of gene expression, gene mutation and repair, recombinant DNA technology. In chemistry students learn the synthesis and characteristics of carbon compounds with various functional groups. In Inorganic chemistry they deal with trends in the properties of transitional and inner transitional elements, various theories of bonding in metals. They also learn principles of physical chemistry and their applications in phase equilibria and electro chemical cells.
Third Year
In third year, emphasis is given on applied aspects like immunology, industrial, medical, food and environmental microbiology. In genetics, they are introduced to fundamental principles of population genetics and its applications, exposed to in-depth study of applied genetics in relation to plant, animal and microbial biotechnology. In chemistry, students learn about the study of various theories of bonding in inorganic complexes and their application in the study of metallo-porphyrins, synthesis and chemical properties of bio-molecules, study of reaction rates, feasibility and factors affecting reactions. They also learn about the separation techniques and physic-chemical methods of analysis.
Course Outcome
At the end of the course students learn the details of structure, biochemical characteristics and genetics of different micro organisms along with the chemistry involved in different life processes. In microbiology, students learn the techniques like aseptic culturing, identification of micro organisms, the qualitative and quantitative analysis of biomolecules, the basic principles of diagnostic procedures, and understand the relationships of microorganisms and evaluate their potential for the production of enzymes and other products in different fermentative processes. In genetics, students develop competency in chromosome analysis using different cytogenetic techniques as well as understanding all modern techniques of DNA and protein analysis with special reference to DNA fingerprinting and fluorescent in-situ hybridization. In chemistry students learn about the gravimetric semi micro analysis and identification and preparations of organic compounds. They also learn the reaction mechanisms through kinetics experiments and instrumentation techniques.
The practical approach to various basic theoretical concepts provide the students an in-depth understanding of the subject and also make them aware of important laboratory techniques. They become competent to face any challenging task and take admission into various post graduate programmes in prestigious institutes across India and abroad.
Eligibility
Candidates who have passed the Intermediate Public Examination conducted by the Board of Intermediate Education, A.P., or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto with BiPC with marks prescribed by the university and college are eligible for admission to B.Sc (Mi.G.C) 1 Year Course.
